A cento is a sort of ‘patchwork’ poem based on a particular challenge which is to use only lines (or parts of lines) from a great poet of the past in order to create new texts. The patchwork poem should have a theme not dealt with in the hypotext. The lusus behind the patchwork poem is extremely subtle and requires not only erudition but also technical and combinatorial skills on the part of the poet. The aim of my paper is to analyse some of the several ‘acrobatics’ devised by the patchwork poet in order to overcome the many obstacles he finds on his way. My argument will be developed through a series of examples from the Medea of Hosidius Geta (the subject matter of my PhD thesis) and from the Vergiliocentones minores of the Salmasianus codex. The minores form the subject of my studies as part of the CALCOS project financed by the Provincia Autonoma di Trento (Bando ‘post-doc’ 2011, determinazione del Dirigente n. 2 del 27 gennaio 2012). I will analyse simultaneously some centos from different ages and authors in order to reveal the compositional ‘tricks’ and even some typical technical errors which may be helpful to an editor. Finally I will try to show some of the difficulties experienced by the philologist who has to keep the balance between standardising the cento text according to the hypotext and accepting the centonarian oddities.
