«O voluttà del soglio»: Eros e potere nella Tebaide di Stazio

Tyrants’ lust for power shares significant traits with the erotic attraction; there is an evident link between potestas and its holder.

Starting from Greek precedents, like the philosophical treatises (Plato, Xenophon), historiography (Herodotus) and tragedy (Euripides), I will examine the interweaving of libido amandi and libido regnandi in Thebes - a twine that the poem itself requires. Thanks to the experience of Senecan tragedy and the Latin epic tradition, Statius deepens the study of this crucial issue throughout the Thebaid. There are several important case-studies useful for this discourse: the representation of exiled Polynices as a lover eager to reach his beloved (1, 314 ss.), or as a bull cast away from the herd (2, 323 ss.); or, even more, the dialogue during the night between the hero and his bride (2, 332-63). In addition, it will be considered the relationship between Power and Eros in the perverse declination of the incest, a specific feature of the Thebaid (cf. eg. 4, 88-92; 11, 329-53). These passages allow to appreciate, among other things, the reception of elegiac patterns in imperial epic as well as to identify a fil rouge that runs through the whole poem of Statius.

Il fascino che il Potere esercita sul tiranno condivide tratti significativi con l’attrazione erotica; le indagini più acute sulla potestas sottolineano il rapporto quasi amoroso che intercorre fra essa e chi la detiene. Partendo da precedenti greci, come la trattatistica filosofica (Platone, Senofonte), la storiografia (Erodoto) e la tragedia (Euripide), esaminerò l’intreccio di libido amandi e libido regnandi nella Tebaide – un intreccio richiesto dall’argomento stesso dell’opera. Forte delle esperienze del teatro senecano e della tradizione epica latina, Stazio approfondisce lo studio di questo nodo cruciale lungo tutto il poema. Numerosi i casi di studio significativi per questo discorso: la raffigurazione di Polinice esule come un amante impaziente di raggiungere l’amata (1, 314 ss.), o come un toro allontanato dall’armento (2, 323 ss.); o, ancora, il dialogo notturno tra l’eroe e la sua sposa (2, 332-63). Inoltre, andrà considerato il rapporto tra il Potere e l’Eros nella declinazione perversa dell’incesto, contaminazione che grava su tutta la Tebaide (cf. ad es. 4, 88-92; 11, 329-53). I passi esaminati, per quanto selezionati, permettono di apprezzare, fra l’altro, la ricezione di moduli elegiaci nell’epica di età i periale e di individuare un ulteriore fil rouge tematico che attraversa l’intero poema staziano.
